The Art Of Negotiation Skills

Have you ever negotiated in your life?? I bet all of you have done it especially when you want to buy something. Not only that, we also negotiate with our parents, friends, teacher and others. There are two types of negotiation which is distributive negotiation and integrative negotiation. Distributive negotiation is the condition where two or more parties compete over distribution of a fixed sum of value while integrative negotiation involved parties that cooperate to achieve maximum benefits.

There are four fundamental concepts in skilled negotiation which are:
1. BATNA (best alternative to negotiate agreement)- a preferred course of action in the absence of deal
2. Reservation Price- the least favorable point at which one will accept a deal.
3. ZOPA (Zone of possible agreement)-the set of agreements that potentially satisfy both parties.
4. Value creation thru trades – each party gets something it wants in return for something it value much.

This skills must be used when we want to start negotiate in order to gain what we aim.
During this session, we were given 3 different cases and we were divided into 6 group. Each group was given a role to play. We had selected the negotiator and discuss our BATNA, reservation price and other issue. Then, we play a role and start to negotiate. The ‘drama’ was very interesting and I do not even know that they have talent in acting. The most important thing is, the knowledge that I gain from the ‘drama’. They are too emotional and keep on arguing during the negotiation and because of this, they did not have any deal and fail in their negotiation. But for the other group, with the skills of BATNA and ZOPA, the negotiation went well and they came out with a good deal.

Besides that, the negotiation also failed due to some barrier to agreement. Example of the barrier such as lack of trust, informational vacuums, negotiator’s dilemma, spoilers, differences in gender and culture, difficulties in communication and others. All we have to do is sharpen our negotiation skills and be an effective negotiator. We should prepare thoroughly and uses negotiating phase to prepare further.

Public Speaking!!!

Nervous!!! Time to show your talent..Public speaking..Each group were given a topic and my group topic is food and technology and I have chosen golden rice for my presentation.

GOLDEN RICE is the alleviation of life-threatening micronutrient deficiencies. As we know, in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the percentage of morbidity and mortality keep on increasing. This is mostly due to the micronutrient deficiency which is lack of vitamin A, zinc and iron. The best way to avoid this problem is by way of varied-diet, rich in vegetables, fruits and animal products. But, for those who cannot afford varied diet, the best approach is by way of nutrient-dense staple crops. One the example is golden rice, which has a great capacity in reducing micronutrient deficiency or lack of vitamin A.

What is golden rice actually?? Golden rice is one of the genetically-modified organisms where two genes were transformed into the nuclear genome by using a specific promoter. This transformation will lead to the formation and accumulation of beta carotene in the grains. As it named, golden rice has a different color compare to the normal rice. The yellow or golden color indicates the presence of the beta carotene.

It has been proved that golden rice does not give any risk to consumer health. So, this type of crops should be plant all over the world in order to reduce micronutrient deficiency that will lead to mortality and morbidity.

Interviewing Skills & Technique and Mock Interview.

This communication module was conducted by Mr. Abdullah Md Yunos and Mr. Ab. Faruk Ab. Karim. The purpose of mock interview is to expose us to the real environment during the interview. Before the interview session start, we were given a brief view what is the interview all about.

Interviews are particularly useful for getting the story behind a participant’s experiences. Interviews may be useful as follow-up to certain respondents to questionnaires. There are few types of interview which are informal (conversational interview), general interview guide approach, standardized (open-ended interview) and closed interview (fixed response).

Before we go for the interview, all we need to do is prepare ourselves first. We have to do some research on the company and the position that we are going to apply, name and title of the person we are meeting, and we also can identify and analyses the sort of questions we will be asked in the interview and do some practice for the answer.

The most important thing is we have to arrived on time and while waiting, look around and understand more of the organization and warm up by passing small walk. Be polite and personable to everyone you encounter. Remember, dress professionally and present an attractive professional image.

There are some tips during to have an effective interview. Make eye contact and smile. We also need to create a good impression through the opening statement. We can give a brief speech for couples of minutes expressing most important skills and attributes that we can bring to the company as well as our work experience in relation to its need. Besides that, emphasis the response with positive and demonstrate enthusiasm, interest and confidence.

Powerful presentaion skills

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, we have a session with Mr. Abdullah Mohd Nor and Madam Rusilawati regarding the powerful presentation skills. At first, we had an activity where we have to talk to the passive audience. Why we were asked to do that?? Actually the reason is to know the feeling if we were talking to someone but she did not give you any response. What do you feel?? Angry? That’s what I feel other than boring..

Then, we were asked to talk to the person next to us, which are an active audience. The feelings are totally not the same when we talk to people and they give an attention and yet give you a response. Other than that, we also learn if we want to have a good presentation, we need to prepare first. Without any preparation, we might have a problem to present well. The other tips to have a powerful presentation are maintain eye contact, get a relevant content and again, practice and be confident!!

proposal for finale

Most people learn about proposals and business development on the job. We also learn how to do and plan a proposal for our finale presentation. The proposal was done in group and we have come out with a great idea which is phyto-mix yogurt.

Phyto-mix yogurt is a new yogurt with a great potential in reducing type-2 diabetes. Phyto-mix yogurt was name from the inclusion of several herbs and fruit which is Lycium barbarum, Momordica grosvenori, Psidium guajava and Garciana mangostana. The herbs has an antioxidant properties, antidiabetic properties and also contain some phytochemical that will help in reducing diabetes in diabetic patient. This yogurt will reduce diabetes by slowing down the carbohydrate digestion.

We have to plan a great proposal so that our product will be accepted by the customer and we can market the yogurt. As we know, nowadays percentage of people suffered from diabetes keep on increasing.

Happy New Year!!!

What do you understand when people talk about  Awal Muharam??? Maal hijra??? People may think awal Muharam is the day to have a holiday..Yes,it is true..but the thing is, do we really know about Awal Muharam??? Hurm..Let’s have a review what is Awal Muharam all about…

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of the four sacred months of the year in which fighting are prohibited. Muharram is so called because it is unlawful to fight during this month; the word is derived from the word haram, meaning “forbidden”. It is held to be the most sacred of all the months, excluding Ramadan. Some Muslims fast during these days. The tenth day of Muharram is called Yaumu-l ‘Ashurah, which is known by Shia Muslims as ‘the day of grief’.

Muslims celebrate this day to pay homage to Prophet Muhammad. The way the Muslims celebrate New Year's Day is very different from other such celebrations. They gather in mosques and offer special prayers and listen to special readings from the Koran. An important part of the prayer service is the narration of the Hegira or the flight of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina. Muslims are supposed to reflect on their life, the manner in which they are leading their life and about their own mortality. The day is spent in prayer and on reflecting on how one is leading one's life. There are no celebrations that we normally associate with New Year's Day.

Already got an idea what is Awal Muharam all about?? Let us together spent a day in prayer and ‘muhasabah’ ourselves…INSYAALLAH...

May God bless you guys…
